"Forsaketh syyne, er synne yow forsake." This is the final line in the Physician's Tale. When a crooked judge, Apius, sees a beautiful girl, Virginia, he decides he must have her. Apius hires a churl, Claudius, to bring him this beautiful girl and in exchange Claudius will be rewarded. Apius and Claudius conspire a plan that will surely bring Virginia to Apius. But, how will Virginius, father of Virginia deal with this?
This tale is considered to be one of the moral tales that is included in The Canterbury Tales. However, the ending of this tale questions the moral and ethical choices made in this story. The Pardoner's Tale comes after the Physician's Tale. After hearing the Physician's Tale Harry Bailey asks for the Pardoner to tell a more cheerful story due to the morally questionable tale that is the Physician's Tale. This tale was written in the 14th century by Chaucer. It is believed to be one of his earliest works. Most likely, this particular tale was written before Chaucer had even begun The Canterbury Tales. There is believed to be some possible historical allusion in this tale that we will dig into a little bit after reading the tale. This tale has had some inspiration in other famous authors' works. In Titus Andronicus, Shakespeare has a similar theme by having the daughter, Lavinia, of Titus being faced with a difficult ethical decision on whether or not she has to live through shame. Titus even compares himself to Virginius in this play. Now, let's look in on The Physician's Tale! |
The Physician in the General Prologue
Chaucer describes the Physician as a doctor of medicine who has taken care of very many patients. The Physician is even praised when Chaucer says "In al this world ne was ther noon hym lik" which translates to "in all this world, there was no one like him." The Physician is given high acclaim throughout his description in the general prologue. The Physician is shown to have a fondness for gold, but this does not take away from the fact that he is described as a "perfect practitioner" who knows of all remedies.

Historical Allusion to John of Gaunt
Chaucer and John of Gaunt were close friends until they actually become brothers-in-law through one of John of Gaunt's marriages. In the Physician's Tale, there is a lengthy digression on governesses that may allude to John of Gaunt. In 1386 the daughter of John of Gaunt, Elizabeth, went to France with John Hastings who was the 3rd Earl of Pembroke. The governess of Elizabeth was Katherine Swynford, who happened to be John of Gaunt's mistress and eventually his wife. Chaucer's virtue of governesses has been deemed to be a sly, political move on his part.
Reference to Jephthah
In lines 29-38 the story of Jephthah is told. Jephthah prays to God to overcome the ammonites. Due to this he promises to kill the first thing that comes out of his house as a sacrifice. His only-child, a daughter, who is also a virgin, walks out of the house first. As an unjust vow she asks to go to the hills for two months with her friends so that she can spend some time weeping for her virginity. Unfortunately, Jephthah must ultimately fulfill the sacrifice that he promised to make.
Shakespeare's Shoutout to Chaucer
Titus Andronicus was written after Chaucer's work, but Shakespeare's slight adaptation of the the Physician's Tale shows how strong Chaucer's work really is. In Titus Andronicus, Titus has a daughter named Lavinia. Titus and his family have been feuding with another family and the other family decides to punish Lavinia. Lavinia is raped and mutilated in Titus Andronicus and has a very poor quality of life afterwards. The men who have done this to her have mutilated her tongue off, as well as her fingers so that she cannot tell anybody who did this to her. Titus sees how miserable Lavinia is and decides that she should not have to live in shame and decides to kill her. After this he compares himself to Virginus as Virginius also had to kill his daughter so she doesn't live in shame.

Venus?
In line 59 Chaucer says "For wyn and youthe dooth Venus encresse." In mythology, Venus is the goddess of love, not to be confused with the planet! Venus has been mentioned throughout The Canterbury Tales. In the Knight's Tale before Palamon and Arcite fight they visit temples of the gods and goddesses, one of these temples is the temple of Venus. It is important to know that when Venus is mentioned throughout The Canterbury Tales that the characters are referring to the goddess of love and beauty.
Livy
Literature is always constantly evolving and modifying itself. What a lot of people might not know is that authors often get inspiration from other writers. Writers will try and use a similar topic, but radically change the presentation of the writing. This is what Chaucer did here with the work of Titus Livius (Livy). This tale came from Livy's work, but Chaucer changed it a little bit. Chaucer's changes to the story include:
-Eliminating the class issues that are featured in Livy's work. In Livy's story Apius is a patrician (ruling aristocracy) and Virginius is a plebian (lower class).
-Eliminating a lot of the political edge. In Livy's version, plebians unite to support Virginius and they try to overthrow the judicial system that has crooked judges, much like Apius.
-Chaucer adds in additional dialogue between Virginius and Virginia, as well as a reference to Jephthah.

1.) How are we, as the audience, supposed to react to the tragedy in the Physician's Tale? How are we supposed to deal with the empathy and pity we have for Virginia? 2.) The most commonly heard moral of this story is "forsake sin, before sin forsakes you." Do you believe that this moral is fitting? Furthermore, how do you interpret this? |

The Physician's Tale Activities
1.) Analysis of the tale: "The Physician's Tale" contains arguably one of the most emotionally gripping moments in The Canterbury Tales when Virginius beheads Virginia. Write a 2-3 page paper explaining this choice to behead Virginia and why you think it is or is not the correct choice. Draw from dialogue in the tale to explain your decision on whether or not Virginius made the right choice to behead Virginia. There is no correct answer, but your answer should go beyond saying "Virginius should not have done this because they found out Appius and Claudius were evil."
2.) Interpretive Translation: Students are given the option to choose around 25 lines to translate literally, and then perform an interpretive translation of the tale. This interpretive translation can be a poem, short story, a video, or anything that will show an interpretive translation of the tale to a modern time. Students should then write roughly 1-2 pages explaining their video and why they made the choices they did. An example is shown below:
